Step Vans to the Rescue As the post-WWII economy boomed, housing construction in both the cities and suburbs provided unique challenges for fire departments across America. The hook and ladders were just too big for every situation. Many fire departments turned to step vans as an intermediate size between the big pumpers and the old pickup based fire trucks.
