Revolutionized Sports Car Design
Unbeatable on the Track and on the Road Sports cars, up until 1936, all had three things in common-they handled poorly, rode roughly, and were poorly equipped. BMW, which until the early 1930s had been a manufacturer of aircraft engines and motorcycles, changed all of this in 1936 with the introduction of the 328 Roadster. All of a sudden the standards for road holding, cornering, and performance were raised to levels that took other makers decades to match. With no running boards or spoke wheels, the 328 was almost too modern for its time. Using a tubular frame and transverse-leaf-spring independent front suspension, this aerodynamic speedster achieved 94 mph. And was, literally, unbeatable. In 1937 alone, the 328 won over 200 races, including the Mille Miglia and the 24 Hours at Lemans.
