1936 Wanderer W25K Roadster
The Popular Priced Piece of the Auto Union Ring The depression hit German auto manufacturers very hard. By 1932 many were bank-owned or in receivership. DKW, the healthiest of these failing companies, combined with Audi, Wanderer and Horch to form the Auto Union conglomerate. Using the 4-ring symbol, still used by Audi, to represent the divisions, DKW was assigned the low-end of the market, Wanderer the mid-price, and Audi and Horch the higher price points. However, Dr. Ferdinand Porsche, Auto Unions chief designer, had other ideas for the Wanderer. In 1936, to accompany its line of 4-cylinder sedans and coupes, Porsche designed a compressor for the 1963 cc. Engine and then placed it in the new aesthetically designed W25K Roadster.
