It Changed the Way the World Looked at Japanese Cars
First Japanese Muscle Car Yutaka Katayama had been seeking a sports car to market ever since starting Nissan US in 1960. By the early 1970’s he felt the timing was right. New U.S. safety and emission-control regulations had caused the Corvette to downsize its engine. The Austin-Healy 3000 could not even pass these standards. Katayama poured all his efforts into convincing Nissan to produce a true sports car. Using Jaguar E-type styling and adding 2 cylinders to Datsun’s 4-cylinder engine, the 240-Z was born. It was an immediate success, selling 52,658 at $3526, becoming the first collectible Japanese automobile.
Japanese Executives Wanted to Name it Fairlady Katayama had spent enough time in America to know that a sports car named “Fairlady” was not going to attract the U.S. consumer. He and some trusted coworkers removed the “Fairlady” nameplates and replaced them with 240Z badges. This 1:18 precision die cast replica has all the official logos and insignias as the original, plus opening doors, hood and hatchback, working steering system, detailed engine and interior, all topped of with a flaming orange factory baked enamel finish.
