1958 Mercedes-Benz 220SE Convertible

A Milestone for Mercedes Certainly Mercedes had a reputation for excellence before 1958. From the first Daimler-Benz in the 1880’s through the elaborate touring cars of the 1930’s, Mercedes-Benz quality and performance were well known. But the years after WWII were not particularly fruitful for the German automaker. Their first post-war luxury passenger cars, the 190D and 300SL did not produce the sales Mercedes wanted in the U.S. The 190D was a little underpowered and the 300SL, with its gull-wing doors, was too revolutionary for mass sales. To solve this problem, Mercedes designers and engineers developed the 220SE. Its 6-cylinder 2.2 liter fuel injected engine was more powerful and fuel efficient than its predecessors. The new design, while still featuring traditional Mercedes styling, provided better flexibility. The Milestone Car Society recognized this landmark car by giving it Milestone Car status.
