Safety and Incomparable Luxury In
1926 General Motors took ownership of the Fleetwood Company. Long renowned as
makers of the finest car bodies (over the years Duesenberg, Maybach, Packard and
Fiat among others used some Fleetwood coaches) Fleetwood now worked just for GM,
and mainly for Cadillac. Although some may complain that Fleetwood lost some of
its individuality at this time, producing only 315 V-16s in 1938 is a far cry
from mass production. Cadillac justified its claim as Americas most revolutionary
car in 1938 with its completely redesigned V-16 engine. Now down to only 431
cubic inches, it still provided the same 185 horsepower (speed was never Caddys
intent). With its new pancake bus-engine design, it took much less space allowing
the car to be 12 shorter and 1/2 ton lighter than previous years. Although only
315 were produced, it outsold the Packard and Lincoln V-16s combined. Precision
