Worlds largest Commercial Plane Until the Jumbo Jets of the Late 1960s
Pan American, anxious to become the first transatlantic carrier, commissioned Boeing in the mid-1930s to come up with a flying boat that had the range, speed, comfort and safety to do the job. The 314 Clipper, at 40 tons almost twice as big as any other commercial aircraft of the time, was able to accommodate 74 passengers in 4 cabins. Powered by 4 1500hp. Wright Cyclone radial engines, it had a 3500 mile range and 193 mph. cruising speed. Its first passenger flight took place June 28, 1939 with 22 people paying $675 round trip, the equivalent of $7500 today.
