First Ever Night FighterP-61A Black WidowCommittee Made a Camel
The P-61 Black Widow is a great example of the old saying that a camel is a horse made by a committee. Early in 1941 the Army Air Corp wanted a night fighter and commissioned Northrop Aircraft to develop what became the P-61. 2 Pratt and Whitney R-2800 engines gave it adequate power. The Black Widow had 4 20mm cannons and 4 0.5mm Browning Machine Guns with both forward and rear firing stations. Later versions even carried 6,400 lbs. of bombs. But by trying to include all these elements, production took three years and the result was a fighter that was too large, too complex and too heavy.
