The Plane That Made the Mustang Famous
P-51B Single Seat Fighter
Turned the Tide of the Air War Over Europe
The P-51A just did not do the job. Its Allison engine could not give it the speed and altitude to win dogfights over France. The Air Force immediately commissioned North American Aviation to develop a faster, higher-ceiling, longrange fighter using a Packard-built Merlin V-1650 engine. Now the Mustang was ready to rumble. With the advent of the P-51B, the Allies could, and did, reclaim the skies. Lt. John Thornell Jr. nicknamed his P-51B the Patty Ann II. Assigned to the 328th Fighter Squadron, Lt. Thornell was the 8th highest ranking ace of the E.T.O., with 17 victories.
