Answering Their Countries Call to Arms
Besides being effective fighters during WWII, the Lockheed P-38 and de Havilland Mosquito also have in common their history of starting out as unwanted orphans. But military authorities quickly realized their potential and both were mass-produced in many different versions and used by many of the Allied countries.
Lockheed P-38 Lightning - In 1937 the Army Air Corp issued a specification for a long-range interceptor and escort fighter that could go 360mph at 20,000 feet for one hour. Lockheed, who had never built a strictly military plane, was an unlikely candidate. Using both the unusual split-body design and dual untested Allison V-1710 engines, the P-38 more then meet the specifications with a speed of 400mph and a 40,000 foot ceiling. The E-version, nicknamed Lightning, featured a 20mm Hispano cannon and 4 Browning machine guns
