The Best the Russians Had MIG-23 Jet FighterGreat Speed, Poor Performance
Russia was very concerned during the Cold War of the 1960's that their fighters needed long runways making them very vulnerable to attack. The Mikoyan-Guryevich MIG-23 was developed in the late '60's featuring variable-sweep wings with flaps on both edges. This gave it tremendous lift and could be used on much shorter runways. Its performance is a source of great debate. The Russians claim a few Israeli jets being downed by MIGs but the United States and her allies think the MIGs lost in all of the over 50 air-to-air combat situations.
