The First Kamikaze Kawasaki KI-45 Toryu The Dragon Slayer Literally, Toryu means dragon slayer and that is what the Japanese hoped the Kawasaki KI-45 would be. The first Japanese twin-engine fighter, powered by 2 1080 horsepower Mitsubishi radial engines, the Toryu was not particularly successful early in the war, outmaneuvered by U.S. fighters. But when used at night against bombers its effectiveness increased and they destroyed 7 B-29s one night in June 1944. Today they are most remembered as the planes used for the first kamikaze attack in the waters off New Guinea.
