Slow, Practical and VersatileJunkers JU.52 MinesweeperTante Ju to the Rescue
The Junkers JU.52 was Germany's most famous military transport during WWII. Called Tante Ju (Aunt Ju) by the Axis and Iron Annie by the Allies, its 3-engine version was first built in 1931 and used as both a transport and bomber. Like many German aircraft of that era, it was outdated by the late 1930's but no adequate replacement was available. In WWII the Ju.52 was no longer suitable as a bomber (too slow and vulnerable to fighters) but still adequate for transport. With the addition of a Dural hoop that generated a magnetic field which detonated magnetically fused land mines, it served as a minesweeper in almost every European battlefront.
