Close Support on the Eastern Front Junkers JU 87D-3 Stuka Not Great, But the Best Germany Had The Junkers was not a great plane. Although tremendously effective in the beginning of WWII against little opposition, especially when equipped with its terrifying screaming sirens, it proved very vulnerable once it came up against British and American fighters. Germany kept trying to phase it out but could come up with nothing better. The D-version had no sirens but added firepower and armament. These were mainly used for close support for troops on the Eastern Front.
