Worth the Wait Hawkeye Typhoon Terrorized the German Army The development of a big and fast single-seat fighter bomber by the British was a long tedious process with many setbacks. The first engine, the Vulture, was completely scrapped and the 2180hp. Napier Sabre II had reliability problems. Even worse, the rear fuselage kept coming apart. But these snags were finally overcome and eventually 3,330 Typhoons were produced. Starting in 1943 they were unstoppable, catching and destroying the fastest German fighter-bombers and terrorizing Nazi troops throughout Europe.
