The Navy's Best Torpedo Bomber Grumman TBF-1C Avenger The American Avenger In WWII's Pacific Theater of Operations against Japan, one of the Navy's most effective weapons was the Grumman TBF-1C. This 3-man crewed torpedo bomber was the biggest and heaviest of all carrier-based aircraft. It was well-equipped with 2 7.62mm machine guns, 3 12.7mm machine guns and 2000lbs of bombs, torpedoes or depth charges. Powered by a 1900hp Wright Radial engine, it was nicknamed the Avenger because its first public showing by Grumman was December 7, 1941.
