By the late 1930's a biplane fighter seemed obsolete. But powered by an 840hp Bristol Mercury engine and with 4 .303" Browning machine guns, the Axis found it to be a formidable opponent. First used by the Finns against the Russians, the Gladiator was the first plane to meet and defeat German bombers over the skies of England. The Gladiators proved most useful when carrier based and facing slower moving opposition.
