The Tanks of D-Day
German Pzkpfw V Ausf. G Panther
The Greatest Invasion in History
On June 6, 1944, the Allied forces, under the command of General Dwight Eisenhower, began the largest invasion in the history of the world as they attempted to reclaim Europe from the Nazis. The invasion started in the air and the sea but soon turned into a bloody ground war with the Allies pushing forward and the Axis holding on to its ill-gotten territory with all its might. The History Channel, in conjunction with Corgi, has selected 3 tanks, one each from the United States, England and Germany, to commemorate this momentous occasion. The U.S. Sherman Blockbuster conquered through its vast numerical superiority, outnumbering the enemy 14-to-1. The British Churchill was a heavy tank, built to attack, not evade. The Panther was a German heavy tank built during the early 1940s. Only a few thousand were produced. Although superior to the Allied tanks in many ways, slow production and overheating problems limited its effectiveness.
