World's First Minivan
Fiat 600 Multipla Taxi
Helped Italy Recover from WWII
After WWII, Fiat wanted to make an inexpensive car to hold 4 adults. Designed by Dante Giacosa, the Fiat 600 basically put 4 adults in a tin can, only 10 1/2 feet long. The 4-cylinder engine was in the rear, a first for Fiat. One year later, in 1956, Fiat introduced the 600 Multipla, the world's first minivan, Available with many seating options, it was designed for 6 adults and wasn't cheap, costing $7300. All told, Fiat sold 2.7 million 600's between 1955 and 1969 and this has been credited with driving Italy's post-war economic recovery.
