The Car That Saved Ford
New Bathtub Design Stops Ford From Going Down The Drain
Henry Ford II took over an ailing company from his grandfather in 1945. By 1948, things were looking even worse. Lagging sales caused by designs that hadnt changed since before WWII had placed ford on the edge of bankruptcy. A new design team led by George Walker and Engineering VP Harold Youngreen then came up with a radical new design that proved to be just what America wanted. The new bathtub design featured an integrated body and fender that, along with the slab sides gave these cars a sleek continuous line. This design won Ford the prestigious Fashion Academy Award Car of the Year. Hotchkiss Drive, a smoother ride made possible by flexible new rear springs, Magic Action king-size brakes and Picture- Window visibility, also enhanced performance. Ford became, once again, the #1 selling car in America. Mercury had its best year to date, finishing in 6th place in sales. With sales doubled over 1948, Ford was out of trouble and once again Americas car.

Less Doors=More Sales
Every car enthusiast knows the story of the 1949 Fords. Henry Ford II., with his company in danger of financial collapse, spent $72 million to completely redesign the line. This gamble paid off splendidly, providing a $171 million profit and Car of the Year status. One of the models that was completely redone was the Station Wagon. Ford eliminated the 4-door version, claiming parents wanted 2 wide doors rather than 4 narrow ones. More importantly, the body, frame and roof, still produced at their Iron Mountain plant, was all-steel. Even the wood-side panels were now grafted onto the all-steel Lifeguard body. The result was their best selling wagon of all time, with 31,412 sold at $2,119.

Last Great Pillared Sedan
1951 Ford Custom Crestliner
Last of the Crestliners
It only lasted two years. But with its sharp 2-tone factory-baked enamel finish, vinyl roof and standard 100hp V-8 engine, the Crestliner was Ford`s sportiest model during the early 1950s. Sales, unfortunately, were never up to expectations with only 17,000 sold in 1950 and less than 9,000 in 1951. The reason, of course, was that both Chevrolet and Chrysler beat Ford into developing a true pillerless hardtop. By late 1951 Ford had caught up with the introduction of the Victoria. Despite costing 20% more than the Crestliner it outsold it 12-1. Seeing the publics response, for 1952 Ford made Crestline a series that included the Victoria, Sunliner convertible and Country Squire wagon.
