The 1956 Plymouth Belvedere Sport Coupe incorporated muted fins with chrome trim, 2-tone finish, vertical taillights and a new jet plane-type hood ornament, as part of the “Forward Look”. 16,473 were sold, starting at $2071 with the standard 6-cylinder engine. The Big 3 (Ford, GM, and Chrysler) could afford to retool and redesign their lines almost yearly, which is what the newly affluent American middle class demanded. Independent makers like Studebaker, Packard, Kaiser and Hudson could not afford this and tried to compete with extreme styling. Studebaker produced some of the most interesting designs of this era like the bullet-nose 1951 and the 1957 Golden Hawk but sales kept declining. Available only as a 2-door hardtop, the Golden Hawk featured a wraparound front grille, severely slanted windshields and large fins. Under the hood, the 289 cubic inch V-8 was supercharged to 275 horsepower. 1957 was the best year for the Golden hawk but still only 4,356 were made. Part of Cadillac's Car-of-the-Future styling was rubber-tipped bumper guards which, for obvious reasons, became known as Dagmars. Other more important changes included the tubular x-frame chassis, which gave greater structural rigidity and a lower body line, hooded headlights and circular parking lights. Beginning of the Fins 1957 started Cadillac's 3 year love affair with rear fins that culminated in 1959. The Series 62 Convertible Coupe cost $5225 and 9,000 were made. Standard equipment included Hydra-Matic drive and power steering, brakes, windows and seats. Nothing pointed to success in 1957 more than driving one of these 300 horsepower Cadillacs.
