Navy's Greatest Combat AircraftF-4U-1D CorsairFirst U.S. Warplane to Exceed 400MPH
The F4U Corsair was developed from the Navy's request for a single-seat carrier-based fighter. The most unusual feature of the Corsair, the inverted gull wings, was needed to make the gear legs shorter for carrier storage. The 1D version improved upon earlier F4U's in power, with the now water-injected Pratt & Whitney Double Wasp now up to 2250hp. and firepower. These 1D's featured 6 0.5mm Brownings in the wings plus 2 1000lb. bombs or 8 rockets underneath. Almost 13,000 Corsairs were built between 1940 and 1953.
