Turned the Tide of the War in the Pacific Douglas Dauntless SBD-3 Slow But Deadly The Douglas Dauntless SBD-3 was the premier Navy bomber until late in 1943 when the Curtis SB2C Helldivers were delivered. The Dauntless was a 2-seat dive bomber that could operate from land or aircraft carrier. The 1000 hp. Wright Cyclone engine could only generate 250mph. but its' 456 mile range, 1500 lb. bomb load and 4 Browning machine guns enabled them to be very effective against the Japanese navy. This particular SBD-3 was part of the Battle of Midway when the Navy turned the tide of the war in the Pacific by sinking 4 Japanese aircraft carriers.
