Race to the Jet AgeDelta Douglas DC-8-11Competition Brings Progress
The 1950's were the most competitive time for the airline industry. Two major manufacturers, Douglas and Boeing, and four major carriers, United, Delta, American and Pan-Am, were in a life or death struggle for market share. Boeing's 707 beat Douglas' DC-8 by 11 months as the first commercial jet airliner. But the DC-8's superior design (30 degree wing sweep handled better than Boeing's 35 degrees) allowed them to quickly make up for lost time. This Delta turbojet is one of only 23 DC-8-11's ever produced.
