Buffalo Bill Bowie Knife

Honoring the Congressional Medal of Honor Winner Buffalo Bill Bowie Knife Buffalo Bill, born William Frederic Cody in 1846, became America's greatest symbol of the Wild West. A trapper, Pony Express rider and Civil War soldier in his youth, he earned the Congressional Medal of Honor in 1872 for his work as a scout in the Indian War. Cody leveraged his new found fame into a career as a showman, presenting his Wild West show throughout the U.S. and Europe. The bowie knife, or Arkansas toothpick as it was nicknamed, was actually a series of knives developed by Jim Bowie and his brother Rezin in the 1820's. Bowie's fame, both the man and the knife, spread after the famous "Sandbar Duel" in 1827. By the time Bowie died at the Alamo nine years later, the knife had already become legendary.
