The Most Famous Helicopter in Military History Bell UH-1E Iroquois Huey Gunship Turbine Engine Provides the Power During the Korean War the U.S. Military realized that piston-engine helicopters were just not powerful enough to provide the lifting capacity and speed needed for modern warfare. Bell Helicopter Textron was given the challenge of finding a better power source. The UH-1 Huey was the result. Powered by a Lycoming 1100 horsepower turbine engine and with room for 4 crew and 14 troops, the Huey was the ideal mix of cabin room, speed and lifting capacity. The UH-1E was the Marines main assault support helicopter during the Vietnam era. This particular Huey was used at Camp Pendleton as a trainer during the mid-1960s.
