The Cavalry’s Favorite Escort AH-1G Cobra Modern Warfare’s First Attack Helicopter Vietnam was a helicopter war. Moving troops quickly into dense areas was a priority. Bell, which won the Army’s bid over four rivals including Sikorsky and Boeing, developed the AH-1G Cobra to provide armored support for troop-carrying helicopters. The Cobra was well-equipped for the task with a 20mm cannon, 7 7mm rockets and up to 8 TOW missiles. 1116 were built between 1967 and 1973 logging more than 1 million operational miles in ‘Nam. The “Widowmaker” nickname can be taken two ways—for the damage it did to the enemy or the Cobra’s tendency to burst into flame when hit by enemy shells.
