A-10 Thunderbolt
Specially Designed for Close-up Support
In the late 1960's, the U.S. Air Force started plans for the first aircraft specially designed for low-altitude flying and day and night troop support. The A-10 Thunderbolt is the result. Powered by twin General Electric turbo-fan engines, the Thunderbolt can maintain altitudes under 1000 feet. Each A-10 is equipped with a Night Vision Imagining System, a 30mm. Gatling gun and up to 16,000 lbs. of arms which can include both Sidewinder and Maverick missiles. Pilot protection is a priority as each Thunderbolt features bullet proof windshield, a titanium cockpit and armor able to withstand a 23mm shell.
