A Horse of a Different Color
1974 Ford Maverick
The Government Butts In
1974 was probably the worst illustration of government interference into the auto industry. Particularly effected were the small cars like the Ford Maverick. Federally mandated total energy-absorbing bumpers (able to handle 5mph direct impact) added 350 pounds to this sub-compact. New pollution standards, which automakers did not have enough time to prepare for, made handling sluggish. Fortunately the Seatbelt Interlock Law was so impractical it was quickly repealed.
Still Ford continued to have a big hit with the Maverick as it account for more than 15% of its over 2 million cars sold. The best seller, with 139,818 units, was this 2-door sedan. Shown here with the upgraded 6-cylinder engine, they cost only $2784.
