The Vega was developed by Chevrolet in 1971 as an answer to the small foreign economy cars flooding the U.S. Although only lasting until 1977, the Vega was a popular car with many firsts. 1974 was by far its best year with over 450,000 sold, more than half being the $2192 Hatchback. This years Vega was the first GM car with front wheel disc brakes and first American car to use aluminum bumpers. The sporty makeover it received that year included the slotted shovel-nose front grille.
