Mercury's First Sub-Compact
1971 Mercury Comet
A Maverick with Makeup
Auto reviewers certainly were not ecstatic about the 1971 Mercury Comet. After limping through the '60's as a kind of full-size car, the Comet was discontinued for 1970. It reemerged in '71 as Mercury's first sub-compact. Cruelly, we feel, called a maverick with makeup, the Comet provided almost 25% of Mercury's 365,310 sales. This 2-door sedan, priced at $2217, was the sales leader with 54,886. Very few are around today, victimized by tin worm rusting.
