High-Revving Brute 1970 Ford Mustang Boss 429 Made for Racing The Ford Mustang Boss 429s produced in 1969 and 1970 existed so that Ford could qualify 500 of its 429 engines for NASCAR racing. It had power to spare, but you could find most of that power at 6000 rpm and higher which didn't translate to the streets very well. It dominated the Dodge Hemi Daytonas in 1969 on the track, but had a more difficult rivalry with the 1970 Plymouth Superbirds.
