In 1970 the Pony Car market was already beginning to decline, but Dodge held high hopes for the brand new Challenger. Aimed at the younger, more affluent muscle car buyer, it was a longer, larger, and more luxurious alternative. Dodge built 76,935 Challengers in 1970, with 19,938 equipped as the R/T.
