The Beetle Grows Up
1967 Volkswagen 1600 Notchback
The Legend Continues
The 1600 Series from Volkswagen enjoyed great success in Europe, and to a lesser degree in the United States. Borrowing some mechanical features of the wildly popular Beetle, these cars featured a 1.6 liter VW air-cooled flat-4 rear engine that generated 65 horsepower. Born as the 1500 series at the Frankfurt Auto Show in 1961, and becoming the 1600 in 1965 when the engine grew from 1.5 to 1.6 liters, these cars were produced in Germany and Brazil until 1973.
