The Best Selling Car Model in History
1959 Volkswagon Beetle
Ferdinand Porsche's People's Car
Most people associate Ferdinand Porsche with the power, speed and beauty of his namesake car but his dream was to develop an inexpensive car for everyone. In the early 1930's he developed a light suspension system and with the support of Hitler the development of what became the Volkswagen Beetle began. In fact, over 370,000 Germans were buying one on the installment plan at the start of WWII. The factory was in the British sector after the war and was quickly rebuilt by them and the car was renamed Volkswagen. In 1949 the British gave the factory back to the German government. In the 1950's Volkswagen began to export a deluxe version to the U.S. featuring better brakes, more colors (in Germany the standard color was gray) and options. In 1972 the Volkswagen Beetle passed the Model T as the best selling car model of all time. In total over 22 million bugs were produced worldwide.
