1958 Continental Mark III Convertible - 1:18 Scale
Largest Unibody Car Ever Built1958 Continental Mark III ConvertibleSuccessful Last Independent Continental
The 1958 Continental Mark III marked the end of Ford's experiment of making it an independent marquee. The next year Continentals were back as part of the Lincoln division. In the early 1950's Ford became very interested in unibody construction (body frame molded to the chassis) and stylist John Najjar was told to design a unibody Continental that would be bigger and roomier than anything Cadillac could offer. With its cube-like shape and 131 wheelbase, the Mark III did all that. And the luxury car buyers loved it. Sales increased 27-fold over 1957's Mark II
Completely new from its criss-cross aluminum grilles to the updated hood ornament, the Mark III was powered by the largest U.S. engine of its time. The 430 cubic inch V-8, with its Holly 4-barrell carburetor, produced 375 horsepower and was used by Continental until 1965.
