The Birth of a Mechanical Miracle 1957 Ford™ Skyliner Worlds Only Hide-Away Hardtop Others had made experimental versions. Ford had even considered it for the Lincoln 5 years earlier. But the 1957 Ford Skyliner was the first real production retractable hardtop convertible. Using 5 motors, 13 switches and 600 feet of wire, this mechanical miracle worked perfectly.
