The Birth of a Mechanical Miracle
1957 Ford Skyliner
Worlds Only Hide-Away Hardtop
Others had made experimental versions. Ford had even considered it for the Lincoln 5 years earlier. But the 1957 Ford Skyliner was the first real production retractable hardtop convertible. Using 5 motors, 13 switches and 600 feet of wire, this mechanical miracle worked perfectly. To get it right, Ford didnt introduce this V-8 powered marvel until spring of 1957, but still sold 20,766 in 5 months, including the first one which was presented to President Eisenhower. Part of an extensive $246 million new styling renovation (that included what Ford called high-cantered fenders and we all called fins), the Skyliner helped Ford regain the #1 sales spot from Chevrolet and put the innovative spotlight back in Dearborn.
