Fastest Production Car of its Time
1957 Chrysler® 300C® Sport Coupe
Like Nothing Else on the Road
In 1957 Virgil Exner's 2nd generation Forward-Look design, called Flite Sweep, again caught Ford and G.M. off-guard, producing spectacular looking cars that looked like nothing else on the road. The Chrysler 300C Sports Coupe is the best example of this muscular, masculine styling. It featured smooth bodylines, lofty tail fins, quad headlights (soon to be illegal), and its unique rugged front grille. No loud two-tone color combinations were offered. 1918 were sold for $4929.
The Magic Was Under the Hood
Factory-sponsored racecars were on the way out in 1957. But the Chrysler 300C continued to dominate wherever it ran. Red Byron was 1st at Daytona in a 300C, averaging an astounding 134 mph. The 300C's Fire-Power V-8 was hemi muscle at its finest. Using special hardware from the rocker arms to the crankshaft, the 392 cubic inch V-8 produced 375 hp. Not only was it the most powerful but also the best handling car on the road. The Ertl 1:18 Limited Edition featuring opening hood, doors and trunk, working steering system and suspension, looks identical to those that rolled off the Chrysler assembly line 50 years ago.
