James Dean's Last Ride
1956 Porsche 550A Spyder
From Tragedy to Victory
Based on the 356-series, the Porsche 550 was designed specifically for auto racing and earned the nickname 'Giant Killer' on the racetrack. Famed actor James Dean, an avid racer, purchased a 1955 Porsche 550 and was killed while driving his Spyder in California. This tragic event only enhanced the legend of the 550 Series. The redesigned 550A emerged in 1956 with a lighter, stiffer frame, better suspension, and an enhanced twin-cam engine. It weighed just 1100 pounds, and surprised the racing world with wins at Nurburgring and Targa Florio.
