But for the returning n G.I.'s of WWII its styling and straight-8 engine seemed old and stodgy. In 1955 this all changed as the Pontiac was remade inside and out. The completely new chassis and frame was longer, lower and more rounded. Under the hood, the straight-8 with its 127 horsepower was gone, replaced by a new Over Head Valve 180 Horsepower V-8. Sales almost doubled 1954's total as 554,090 were produced giving Pontiac its best sales year ever.
