"The Fastest Car of the 1950's"
1955 Mercedes-Benz 300 SLR Coupe Uhlenhaut
Street-Legal Splendor
After one of the nine existing SLR's was destroyed after a horrific wreck at LeMans in 1955, Mercedes Motorsports Chief Rudolf Uhlenhaut ordered two of the remaining eight set aside for modification. These two marvels of engineering were made street-legal for testing, and in preparation for the 1956 racing season. When Mercedes withdrew from competitive racing at the end of the 1955 season, Uhlenhaut used one of his modified Silver Arrows as the world's fastest company car, something the rest of us could only dream about. The Autobahn has never been the same.
