From Millstone to Machinery
The Edward P. Allis company started out as a small burr millstone maker in 1847, founded by. The company produced its first steam engine in the 1860s, and added a variety of steam pumps to the product line. In 1901, the Allis-Chalmers company was formed by merging the Edward P. Allis Co., Fraser and Chalmers Company and Gates Iron Works. Allis-Chalmers produced its first farm tractor in 1914 and the legend of Allis-Chalmers farm equipment was born.
