Show Car Brought to Life 1953 Packard Caribbean Custom Convertible Bringing Back the Packard Magic For the 1952 auto show, Packard exhibited a convertible sports car called the Pan American which won the Gold Medal for Outstanding Design and Engineering Achievement. So popular was this car with visitors to the show that Packard President and General Manager James J. Nance immediately had chief designer Dick Teague work on a production version. Renamed the Caribbean, Teague contracted the Mitchell-Bentley Company of Ionia, Michigan to make 750 for 1953. A Personal Sports Car for 6 Despite its limited production run, the Caribbean was the talk of the automobile world in 1953. Introduced late in the model season it quickly sold out.
