The manufacturing factory was destroyed by bombing and BMW was banned from producing motorcycles per the terms of the German surrender. Once the ban was lifted, BMW started from scratch. 1948 brought the first new models, and in 1953 the R25 was introduced. Nearly 48,000 units were produced from 1953 to 1956, but unfortunately motorcycle sales declined rapidly throughout the late 1950s.
