Smart, Tough and Thrifty 1951 Kaiser Henry J. A Tycoon's Last Gasp Henry J. Kaiser was already rich and famous (he built the Hoover Dam) in 1947 when his Kaiser line of cars made their debut. Initial sales were good as the Big 3 auto companies needed another couple of years to restyle after WWII's military production. But once their new styles started, Kaiser sales flattened. The Henry J., named after a nationwide contest had almost 1?2 million entries, was Kaiser's attempt to compete in the low-priced field. And with 81,900 sold in 1951, a splash was made. But financing ran out and by the mid-50's, the Henry J. was history. Economy is Good, But Where's the Trunk Designed by Dutch Darrin of Packard fame, the exterior of the Henry J. was fine-sleek and modern looking. But inside it was even more basic than the $1343 price tag, for the 6-cylinder version, would indicate. The floor mats were rubber. There was no trunk opening at all, which made the fact that the backseat folded like a station wagon, pretty useless. And the engines were old Willy's clunkers.
