Combining the Two Greatest Names in Automobile History
1950 Ford Deluxe Fordor Yellow Cab
The Pioneer of the Taxi Industry
All regular readers of the National Motor Museum Mint catalog are familiar with the innovations and genius of Henry Ford. Less well-known is John Hertz, founder of the Yellow Cab Company. Starting in Chicago in 1915, it was Hertz idea to develop a company for people who needed a ride but couldnt afford a limousine. First, he commissioned the University of Chicago to determine which color would be the easiest to spot. Yellow Cab is still the largest taxi company in America, at one time serving over 1300 towns and cities. In 1929 Hertz sold his interest in Yellow Cab to Checker and, yes, founded Hertz Rent-A-Car.
