The Lawman's Equalizer
1949 Mercury County Police Coupe
Perfect for Pursuit
Although it wasn't built specifically for that purpose, no car was more perfect for law enforcement than the completely restyled 1949 Mercury. It was priced right with the 2-door coupe still under $2000. It was fast with the 110 horsepower flathead V-8 the liveliest, smoothest engine around. The rigid heavily reinforced all-steel body made it as safe as any car on the road. Most importantly for parkway patrols, the independent front-suspension featuring Soft-Acting coil springs and Sea-Leg telescopic shock absorbers enabled the 1949 Mercury to hold the road and provide great handling at high speeds.
