Fastest American Car of its Time
1935 Auburn Speedster
Couldn't Save the Company
With the Depression reducing sales from a high of 34,228 in 1931 to just over 5,000 two years later, E.L. Cord, the owner, developed an Auburn Speedster for 1935. Ab Jenkins set the U.S. speed record in one of these speedsters, averaging over 100mph for a 12-hour period at the Bonneville Salt Flats. This 100mph became the Speedster's guarantee. 500 Speedsters were built for $2245 and Auburn lost money on every one. Cord hoped they would bring traffic into the showrooms but sales continued to decline and by 1937 Auburn was gone.
