Smash Hit of NY Automobile Show
1933 Pierce Silver Arrow
Styled, and Priced, for the Future
Pierce-Arrow was on its heels in 1933 as their partner Studebaker went bankrupt and luxury car sales were down throughout the industry. But they still went ahead with their Phil Wright designed concept car, the Silver Arrow, made expressly for the NY Automobile Show. Each Silver Arrow, only 5 were made, was hand-built by Pierces most experienced and talented craftsmen. Its $10,000 price tag was 25% more than the most expensive Cadillac.
The Silver Arrow was a remarkable car of the future both inside and out. In 1931 Ab Jenkins broke 14 international speed records at Bonneville Salt Flats with a V-12 Pierce Arrow. For the Silver Arrow, the bigger 175 horsepower V-12 was used. Outside the design was startingly sleek and streamlined with the first American fastback, although we still dont know how anyone saw out of the narrow slits of the rear window. It featured front flush-sided cigarette-like fenders, suicide front doors, a hidden spare compartment next to the engine and, of course, Pierces signature archer hood-ornament
